The Shaw Prize Lecture in Life Science and Medicine
Prof. Emr won the 2021 Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine for his landmark discovery of the ESCRT (Endosomal Sorting Complex Required for Transport) pathway, which is essential in diverse processes involving membrane biology, including cell division, cell-surface receptor regulation, viral dissemination, and nerve axon pruning. These processes are central to life, health, and disease.
Prof. Emr will speak on the topic “Falling in Love with Genetics: ESCRTing Proteins into the Lysosome”. He will describe his efforts on uncovering the molecular machinery responsible for the biogenesis of the lysosome, an organelle which functions in the degradation and recycling of cellular proteins, lipids, carbohydrates and nucleic acids.
